Learn more about DWG File Extension

by admin on May.17, 2009, under Technology

Files having a DWG extension note vector-based image date either in 2D or 3D. FIle Extension DWG means “drawing” and started from the Interact CAD (computer aided design) package in the 1970s and was bought by AutoDesk in the 1980s. It is the most utilized format for CAD drawings. This is controlled too by AutoDesk. To the non-competitors, there is an available read/write application to use during file opening. It is much like the DXF format, an ASCII or binary rendition of file extension DWG. DXF, meaning, Drawing Exchange Format, was created by AutoDesk in 1982 so that files created in AutoCAD will be opened by other programs.

Moreover, the MSI TurboCAD, PowerDWG Translator, Microspot DWG Viewer, and SolidWorks eDrawings Viewer can open DWG files on the Macintosh platform. Meanwhile, for Windows, IMSI TurboCAD, SolidWorks eDrawings Viewer, ACD Systems Canvas, Corel Paint Shop Pro, IrfanView and DWG converters like AutoDWG or Solid Converter DWG are available.

The Autodesk AutoCAD is primarily responsible in making DWG files. Licensed applications in order to view them include RealDWG or DWG TrueView.
